大森 茂夫 【ワシントン＝座波幸代本紙特派員】ロバート・ネラー米海兵隊総司令官は２１日、那覇市で１９日に起きた在沖米海兵隊員による飲酒運転死亡事故について、「亡くなった方のご家族に哀悼の意を表する。また、（事故を起こした）海兵隊員にも深い同情を感じている。（事故は）彼の意図ではなかったと確信している」と述べた。本紙の取材に答えた。海兵隊トップが、飲酒運転で死亡事故を起こした海兵隊員の責任については言及せず、「同情」の意を示した。再発防止策や綱紀粛正などの言及もなかった。
ネラー氏の発言について県幹部は「謝罪の言葉が真っ先に出るべきなのに、非常に違和感を感じる」と不快感を示した。
取材に対しネラー氏は「事故は捜査中であり、日米地位協定の下、彼に何が起きたかについて日本の司法で判決が下されるだろう。今後も捜査に協力していく」と述べた。
また事故は「もちろん、起きてほしくなかったが、起こってしまった。沖縄の人々、日本の人々に理解してほしい。２万２～３千人の海兵隊員が沖縄、日本に駐留している。そしてこの個人は大きな間違いを起こしてしまった」と説明。「私の知る、沖縄の多くの人々は、非常に大多数のアメリカ人は良き隣人であり、文化に対して敬意を表し、海外でも適切な行動を取っていることを理解しているだろう」と述べた。

In Okinawa, there was a fatal car accident.It was driven by drunken young Marine. I’d like to know why it keeps happening, and how do you feel about it?
ネラー氏
Well, our condolences go to the family of the individual who was killed.And I also have great sympathy for the Marine. I’m sure that was not his intent.
But it’s being investigated, and the Japanese courts, based on the Status of Forces Agreement,will adjudicate whatever happens to him. And we’ll continue to cooperate with the investigation.
Obviously, we wish it hadn’t happened. But it did. And I guess I would ask the Okinawan people, and the people of Japan, to understand that there are 22, 23 thousand Marines stationed in Japan and Okinawa. And this one individual appears to have made a very bad mistake.
And I think most people I know, living on Okinawa, may understand that the great,great,great majority of Americans are good neighbors, and are respectful of the culture,and conduct themselves properly when they’re overseas.
