June 23rd was Memorial Day in Okinawa. This was the 60th anniversary of the fierce fight for the Ryukyu Islands and the last major battle of World War II. The occasion is marked by large numbers of people making the journey to Mabuni, in Itoman City to offer prayers to the tombs of loved ones who died in the fighting, and renew vows of peace. This year, 5,199 people attended, 2,000 less than last year. Also, 720 names were added to the Peace Memorial Stone, including those with North Korean roots and those who suffered from leprosy. There are now 239,801 people remembered in the monument. (June 24 am ed)
