Nago – The paddy field belt in Haneji, Nago, one of the most prominent rice-producing locations in Okinawa, is beginning their harvest of the first growing period. On June 30, farms could be seen harvesting large golden-yellow rice plants with combine harvesters.
Haneji’s rice growers produce the popular “Hitomebore” variety, which is sweeter and chewy. One farmer (58, male) said, “This was the best yield in years. It was good that we were able to harvest before the typhoons came.”
Sale of the rice is expected to begin the third week of June. According to the JA Okinawa Northern Regional Agricultural Promotion Center, there is an expected total yield of around 66 tons.
