A third-generation of Okinawan descent, he was born in Lima, Peru. he grew up as a Japanese-American without being aware of his "Uchinanchu" identity, and became interested in Japan when he heard his first-generation grandmother's Japanese songs. At the age of 19, he won a singing contest and won a plane ticket to Japan as a prize, and decided to become a singer in Japan.
After arriving in Japan, he encountered a language barrier and came to Okinawa, his grandparents' hometown. While working part-time at an izakaya (Japanese style bar), he learned to play the sanshin (Okinawan three-stringed instrument) and taiko drums, and fulfilled his dream. In 1990, he attended the first competition. Standing on a small stage, he sang "Condor wa Tondeiku" ("The Condor Will Fly Away"). There were many energetic first-generation people from all over the world," he said. It was very moving."
By the time of the second convention, he had formed Diamantes. The song "Katate ni Sanshin (Sanshin in One Hand)," which was born from a radio program, was chosen as the theme song of the convention. The famous song struck a chord with the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, and was chosen as the theme song for the following 3rd Festival as well. The song has become a representative song of the convention.
One of the joys of the festival is to "chanpuru" with a variety of artists. The 6th convention's performance with Kiiyama Shoten was a memorable one. I want to do more "champuru," he says.
The "Uchinanchu of the world will be the strength of Okinawa. An evolved Okinawa becomes the power of Uchinanchu outside". What I feel after participating in all the conventions is the image of Sinkanucha, which is evolving through champuru.
