The 7th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, sponsored by the Executive Committee, opened on March 31, 2012, bringing together Uchinanchu from around the world who have their origins in Okinawa.
The opening ceremony was held at Okinawa Cellular Park Naha, an indoor sports stadium in Naha City, with Governor Denny Tamaki, Noboru Akamine, Chairman of the Prefectural Assembly, Governor David Ige of the State of Hawaii, and Ritsumasa Takara, President of the Association of Okinawans in Brazil, taking the stage.
They shared the joy of reunion and pledged to spread the spirit of Uchinanchu around the world, including Ichiribacho-de (When you meet a brother, you are a brother), Chimugukuru (The heart of heart), and Yuimaru (The spirit of Okinawa).
The event was postponed for one year due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and was held for the first time in six years.
The opening ceremony was held at the "green note coaster" with the theme song "Utaarana Odorana (Singing and Dancing). Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Ryo Kituna and others performed karate.
The venue was originally scheduled to be Okinawa Cellular Stadium Naha next to Cellular Park, but was changed at the last minute due to rain. Only invited guests were allowed to enter the Cellular Park, and those who could not get in joined the public viewing at the stadium.
The festival will last until the 3rd. During the event, events will be held in various locations to deepen exchanges between Uchinanchu who live in the prefecture and those who live overseas.
