The Okinawa Prefectural Library (Director: Takeshi Miyagi) is currently opening the "Okinawa Prefecture Emigrant Travel Records Database," which compiles travel records of approximately 50,000 people from Okinawa who emigrated to countries around the world between 1900 and 1937. Since its opening in July, the database has been used by approximately 8,000 people in Japan and abroad, and in some cases, relatives have been found. In addition to the database, the library is also conducting research on the roots of the people who came to Okinawa. With the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, interest in this service is high, and requests for the service are increasing rapidly. Based on the results of the research, the library is also encouraging community centers and others to cooperate in order to respond to requests such as "I want to meet my relatives" and "I want to visit a grave.
The database was jointly developed by the prefectural library, the Hawaii Okinawa Genealogical Society, and the Okinawa Immigration Center. The database allows users to search in Japanese, English, Spanish, and Portuguese for the destination, name, age (year of birth), legal domicile, family registry, and passport issuance date of people from the prefecture. By converting dispersed paper documents into multiple languages and storing them in the database all at once, it has become easier to conduct roots research.
On 14th, a meeting was held at the Okinawa Prefectural Library to report the results of the JICA Okinawa trainees' roots research. It was revealed that Kazuo Chinen Ruiz, 47, a second-generation Bolivian, is related to Miyagi, 59, the director of the library.
The two met again at the library on 24th, and exchanged information they had gathered from each other's family trees. Chinen said happily, "I have always wondered where I came from, and now that I know the history of Okinawa through JICA training, I want to come back and visit again.
Director Miyagi said, "I have been involved in roots research in my work, but I thought it was something that had nothing to do with me. When I learned that there are people connected to overseas countries, I wanted to visit them.
Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival will be held on October 31, November 1, and November 3 at Okinawa Cellular Park Naha, the venue of the festival. Even if you don't know the name of the first generation, a house name(trade name) or a name-head can be a decisive factor in the research, he said.
