A group of Hawai’i Uchinanchu form a long line to buy dry foods at Matsumoto Shoten in Matsuo, Naha City on 30th/ Un grupo de hawaianos Uchinanchu forman una larga cola para comprar alimentos secos en Matsumoto Shoten, en Matsuo, ciudad de Naha, el día 30

On the 30th, the eve of the 7th Worldwide Uchinanchu Worldwide Festival, Matsumoto Shoten (Representative: Tsukasa Matsumoto), a dry goods store in Matsuo, Naha City, was overflowing with Uchinanchu from Hawai’i  who wanted to buy Kombu(kelp), Katsuobushi (bonito flakes), Shiitake mushrooms, and other products from 10:30 a.m. Over 100 customers crowded the store to the outside. Representative Matsumoto said, "It's a festival. New Year's Day is also crowded, but we don't get this many people all at once," said Matsumoto.

Many third- and fourth-generation Okinawans come to the store after hearing about it through family members and others, as well as regulars from the first festival. Some customers bring empty bags of the same product. The most popular item is Kombu. It is used to make Kombu rolls, Soki-jiru(soup of Okinawan style stewed pork ribs) , and other dishes.

Linda Kunihisa, 70, a third-generation Uchinanchu, bought eight bags of Kombu at the request of her family. She makes kombu rolls using a recipe her grandmother from Nakagusuku Village taught her, and puts them on the table on New Year's Day.

Kombu is also available in Hawai'i, but each bag contains only about five small pieces of kelp. Kunihisa said that the kelp available in Okinawa is the best for kombu rolls, both in taste and size.

Dayna Shimabukuro, 35, a third-generation Okinawan, purchased 20 bags of kombu and other items. She said she keeps them in the refrigerator and uses them up in six months. This is her first time participating in the event. I'm looking forward to seeing all the Uchinanchu from all over the world gathered in one place," she said.
